HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Windmill Island Gardens’ 2018 “Run of the Mill” got off to a soggy start — but drew dozens of runners and walkers willing to hit the course, despite icy rain and temperatures hovering just over 35 degrees Saturday morning.
Windmill Island Gardens’ development director, Matt Helmus, said more than 120 signed up for the race, and about half showed up Saturday morning, including a family with two younger children. As that family returned, the father was carrying his daughter on his back. Helmus said that was “one for a wedding-day story.”
Helmus said anyone who registered for the 5k but couldn’t attend will stll get their race T-shirt and will get one free entry pass for sometime this season — any day except during Tulip Time, he said.
Some had, at 10 a.m., already crossed the finish line. Dedication of a state historical marker was set for 11 a.m. Mayor Nancy DeBoer was already present at the island’s greenhouse well before visitors arrived.
