HOLLAND (WTHC-AM/FM) — A national nonprofit has filed a lawsuit against Holland Christian Schools — Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ alma mater — claiming Title IX violations.
A group called Stop Sexual Assault in Schools issued a video press release this week indicating it filed suit against Holland Christian Schools for violating Title IX — a federal law protecting students from discrimination based on sex — a law which applies to any institution receiving federal monies.
Since 2012, according to Stop Sexual Assault in Schools, Holland Christian has accepted more than $660,000 in federal funds for food programs, though the State of Michigan. Accepting federal funds requires institutions to provide a Title IX coordinator and related education.
The lawsuit is related to a family who asked the group for help after their daughter was allegedly sexually assulted by a fellow student in 2016.
In an email to WHTC, Holland Christian superintendent Dan Meester wrote that school officials “are reviewing the case with our attorneys and taking steps to actively defend the school.”
