HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The Holland City Council has a few matters to discuss and vote upon during tonight’s bi-weekly business meeting.
The procedural first reading of ordinances dealing with short-term rentals is on the agenda. The biggest point of contention is allowing of non-owner occupied houses to be used in this manner. While some say that Holland needs to tap more into this growing industry, others claim that such rentals could erode the character of residential neighborhoods and increase the shortage of affordable housing in the Tulip City.
Council will also be asked to approve a new five-year contract with Allied Waste Systems to handle solid waste and recycling services in Holland. Allied is in the process of acquiring Chef Container, and company officials have committed to honor Chef’s already-submitted bid of nearly 6.7 million dollars for maintaining such services. Three other firms extended bids that are between eight and 10 million dollars.
Council members will go over the agenda in public and also huddle behind closed doors to review labor negotiations prior to the 7 PM business meeting in chambers at Holland City Hall.
