SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The next step in the transition from a local police department to police protection from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department for the City of Saugatuck comes tonight.
City Council members are being asked, on a voice vote, to approve an agreement between the city and the department that would provide four deputies to patrol the Lakeshore community as an independent contractor. It’s a three-year deal through the middle of 2021, with a 90-day notice for termination, at a current annual fee of nearly 103 thousand dollars, as set in the standard sheriff’s department agreement with any municipality for police protection.
Two weeks ago, the Saugatuck City Council approved a resolution dissolving a 20-year pact with neighboring Douglas for police services from that community, effective at the end of June.
