SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Saugatuck has decided to take the plunge.
During last night’s City Council meeting, the panel approved a resolution notifying the City of the Village of Douglas that a 20-year intergovernmental police services agreement would not be renewed when it expires on June 30th. The decision comes following a recommendation by a Police Services Advisory Group that concluded a contract with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department would bring about as much or more protection with reduced costs, along with other benefits. It also culminates about a year-long review process, which included surveys, interviews and focus group sessions. Sheriff Frank Baker explained the options to council members at a workshop session last Thursday.
A decision had to be made before a March 1st deadline by either side to notify the other of its intent to continue or end the pact. The process for the police transition in Saugatuck over the next four months has yet to be finalized. The current Saugatuck-Douglas Police Department will continue to serve Douglas.
Further details about the resolution can be found here.
