UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM) – The school threat season is underway in the wake of the Florida shootings last week, with some districts calling off classes and other keeping doors open.
Holland High School and the Harbor Lights Middle School in the West Ottawa district held classes yesterday as scheduled after separate warnings circulated on Wednesday through unnamed social media outlets. Concerned families contacted Holland Public Safety and Ottawa County Sheriff’s detectives, who were able to identify the sources and verify that these threats were not credible. However, there were extra police patrols in the Holland High neighborhood, while Harbor Lights Principal Dennis White sent a letter to parents saying that disciplinary action would be taken against those who made the threat.
Otsego schools are slated to reopen today after a threat made in that district earlier this week compelled officials there to cancel classes yesterday, even though police in the area determined that the threats to both Otsego and Plainwell schools were not credible; Plainwell schools remained open. Belding High is closed today because of a possible threat made there.
In this video, taken during today’s “WHTC Talk of the Town” program, Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker and Sheriff Services Captain Derek Christensen talked with Ed Ver Schure about the school threat issue, along with upcoming active shooter preparation classes offered by the department.
