ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) –
The search for Zeeland’s new police chief has narrowed.
After sifting through 37 applications once the city decided in December to go through with looking for Bill Olney’s replacement, six men emerged. Current interim chief Kevin Cisler, who was tabbed along with Tom Ball to run the department when Olney retired this summer after 16 years, will vie for the post, along with Wayland Police Chief Steven Harper, Patrick Boyd, the Assistant Commander for the State Police Post in Paw Paw; Greg Frenger, a police captain in the Lansing suburb of Meridian Township, Albion Public Safety Chief Scott Kipp, and Eaton County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Timothy Jungel. However, Kipp has since withdrawn his name from consideration.
The interviews will be held at 1 PM this coming Friday and 9 AM the following Friday, February 23rd, at Zeeland City Hall, although it wasn’t immediately disclosed whether all five men will be interviewed in both sessions, or whether there will be some in one session and some in the other.
The Zeeland City Council had used the timing of Olney’s retirement to consider disbanding the local police department and contracting out services with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, but public opinion was strongly in favor of retaining the local force.
