SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Saugatuck Public Schools are coming to its constituents with the proverbial hat in hand for what the district says are needed improvements.
During last night’s monthly meeting, the board unanimously approved the wording for two proposals that voters will cast ballots on in the May 8th quarterly election. The first would be a 1.17-mill boost to pay for a 50.7 million-dollar bond issue; the other is a half-mill sinking fund request similar to one that was approved five years ago that expired at the end of 2017.
New Superintendent Tim Travis says that the decision to ask for more money for a variety of infrastructure and classroom improvements wasn’t one that the board took lightly. “These two proposals really culminates about 18 months of work crafting a long-range facilities plan,” he explained, “and it really touches on pretty much all aspects of the district.”
Three community forums on the issues are slated in March, with a link to more information about them and the ballot proposals here.
