ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – An artery heading east out of Zeeland was snarled until after dark on Friday due to a two-vehicle crash that spilled 12 thousand gallons of diesel fuel.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brian Buter, a PT Cruiser, driven by 22-year-old Elizabeth Perry of Zeeland, was westbound on Byron Road before the I-196 junction around 12:30 PM when she lost control on the snow-covered road over a bridge. Her vehicle skidded left into the westbound lanes and into the path of an eastbound semi hauling the fuel for J&H, driven by 40-year-old Scott Dryer of Hamilton. The collision knocked the engine out of Perry’s vehicle, and as her car slid onto the side of the bridge, the semi veered left into a ditch and overturned, splling its load.
Both drivers were buckled up and were not injured. Byron Road was closed between I-196 and 76th Avenue as county HAZMAT crews, augmented by staffers from Young’s Environmental, worked on clean up efforts.
Buter added that Perry was ticketd for a basic speed violation.
