ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – While the dreams of a White Christmas along the Lakeshore may be dashed with this week’s weather, one doesn’t need to wait for open ice time at Griff’s Ice House West or for conditions to get colder again in order to don the blades.
A new skating rink at Zeeland Elm Street Park has been in operation for more than a month now. Using synthetic materials instead of ice, patrons can enjoy gliding across its surface in any temperature.
Admitting that he himself doesn’t skate, Zeeland Mayor Kevin Klynstra has seen others enjoy this rink the same way that they would a natural surface facility. “It’s not like skating on regular ice,” he said in a recent monthly appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” with Ed Ver Schure. “It’s not quite as smooth, but once you get used to it, it skates pretty good.”
