GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Distracted driving was apparently to blame for a two-vehicle crash in Jenison last night that hospitalized a 16-year-old motorist.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, Tyler Eekhoff of Ada was driving his car westbound on Chicago Drive (M-121) just before 9 PM when he went through a red light at Main Avenue and smashed into the southbound vehicle of Misty Scott. “A witness advised that Tyler’s vehicle never slowed down as it approached the intersection,” Wildfong said. “Tyler admitted to the police that he was talking on his cell phone at the time of the crash.”
Eekhoff was taken to an undisclosed medical facility in stable condition for treatment of non-life threatening injuries; the 36-year-old Scott and her 13-year-old passenger Olivia Falls, both from Hudsonville, were not hurt.
Wildfong added that deputies ticketed Eekhoff for failing to yield the right of way before he was taken away from the scene as the crash remains under investigation.
