HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Four neighboring units came to the aid of Holland firefighters in putting out a blaze at a recycling company late on Tuesday morning.
Holland Public Safety Fire Captain Chris Tinney and his crews were dispatched to the Recycle Now Incorporated building off of East 19th Street just before 11 AM. “The first units on scene reported a working fire in the building, fully involved, with plenty of smoke, plenty of fire venting out of the front the building,” explained Tinney.
According to a Better Business Bureau online profile, Recycle Now Inc was in its 25th year of operation, and company officials believe that sparks from a collection unit apparently hit some dust that started the blaze. “Anytime you have dust collection, you have the potential for fuels,” Tinney said. “Those materials could create a flammability hazard, but our understanding is, from our records, that there is nothing here that is hazardous.”
Tinney added that, to his knowledge, this was the second time in about four years that firefighters were called to the business that specializes in industrial air filter recycling. Workers at the facility were able to escape safely, while there were no injuries reported to firefighters from the Holland, Holland Township, Graafschap, Hamilton and Park Township crews who responded. No initial dollar estimate of the damage was disclosed, but Tinney said that the building was a total loss.
The fire remains under investigation.
