HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Today is the last day to register to vote in the November 7 election.
Residents may register to vote at their county, city, or township clerk’s office, or by visiting any Secretary of State (SOS) branch office. In Holland the SOS is located at 587 East 8th Street.
The only contested race in the City of Holland on November 7 will be for mayor between incumbent Nancy DeBoer and Second Ward Councilman Jay Peters.
Absentee ballots for the November 7 election are available from the City Clerk’s office for those who will be out of the City on election day or those otherwise qualified to vote by absentee ballot. In addition, the Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday, November 7, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to issue absentee ballots.
Earlier this year in Ottawa County, Hart’s Verity voting system was implemented. It is the first such upgrade in 13 years. It was part of a statewide overhaul of how voting is cast in Michigan. Hart’s Verity voting system was selected for purchase because it is secure, accurate and easy to use says County Clerk Justin Roebuck. Roebuck was appointed this summer to the Michigan Electronic Recording Commission by Governor Rick Snyder.
Voters at the precincts will continue to mark a paper ballot that appears largely the same as previous paper ballots. They will then insert their ballot into a new touch screen scanner and wait for the image of an American flag to appear, signifying that the ballot has been accepted.
The polls will be open on election day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
