ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Help for the forgotten survivors of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico may be on its way.
Zeeland-based De Bruyn Seed Store is collecting a variety of items for pets who have been afflicted by the storms that swept through the Caribbean island last month. Donations of expired and partially opened medications, along with flea and tick meds and shampoo, pouches of dog and cat food, latex gloves, zip-lock baggies of all sizes, towels and sheets and more will be accepted at the retailer off of Washington Avenue through Friday.
Master Gardener Jan Meeuwsen, who is also a licensed veterinarian, says that the need is acute. In an appearance on “WHTC Morning News” on Tuesday, she said that the residents in Puerto Rico “are dumping their animals off at rescue places, at veterinary offices, they don’t know what to do with their animals. They all got fleas, ticks, the mosquitoes are horrible so there are heartworms, and there are all these problems.”
Meeuwsen adds that another collection will probably be taken later this month. For more information, call De Bruyn Seed at 616-772-2316.
