HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater Michigan Chapter will host its annual “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” in Holland at Kollen Park.
More than 600 communities nationwide participate in “Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” which is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. More than five million people in the US suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementias, it is estimated that, this year alone, the disease will cost the nation $259 billion.
Hannah Dayton is the West Michigan Event Coordinator and says the need for awareness and funds continues to grow as the population ages at an increasingly alarming rate.
“So our walk in Holland has grown a little but. but it’s always been a strong core of people that we’re thrilled to have there. We’re looking to grow to see who can join our support group. We serve Ottawa County. Zeeland, Holland and all up and down the Lakeshore. We have supports groups, education programs for caregivers and we have a 24/7 helpline that if you just need a listening ear, you can call. There is always somebody to listen.”
The Walk to End Alzeheimer’s is Saturday, October 7 at Kollen Park in Holland. Registration is at 9:00 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. ceremony and a 10:30 start for the walk. If you’d like to volunteer you can just show up Saturday and they will put you to work.
