GEORGETOWN TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Two people are in stable condition after a single-vehicle crash on M-6.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to westbound M-6 in Georgetown Township on the overpass at Jackson Street around 10:15 A.M. on Monday, September 25. Sgt. Jeff Steigenga says 54-year-old William Douglass of Grand Rapids was initially driving the wrong way on I-196 and then made a U-turn on I-196. He then proceeded to enter the wrong way on the off ramp from I-196 onto the closed section of westbound M-6.
Douglass was then traveling eastbound on westbound M-6 at a highway speed when he approached the bridge overpass above Jackson Street. Due to the significant construction, the roadway was now gravel and exposed at the bridge with approximately one foot lip of cement where the bridge starts.
Douglas collided with the lip of cement which caused significant damage to his vehicle. No construction workers were in the area at the time of the crash. Douglass and his 55-year-old passenger Eleanor Jean Church were injured and transported by Life EMS to Metro Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
