HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Today is the first day of school for most kids in Michigan and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents about the laws for school buses.
Passing a school bus that is loading or unloading students is prohibited under any circumstances. The law requires motorists to come to a complete stop at least 20 feet from a school bus whenever a bus is stopped and employing the use of its two red flashing signals. The driver may proceed once the bus resumes motion.
Sheriff Steve Kempker says most bus drivers are very conscience when traffic is building up behind them.
“They are allowed once the students get on board to pull off to the side, turn off the red lights and let the motorists who have lined up behind them pass through and then continue on. We find that mostly for the county on a lot of of rural roads, people traveling to work in the morning and afternoon will go as far to find a different route and stay off that bus route.”
