ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A playground that entertained youngsters in Zeeland for nearly a quarter of a century is no more.
Workers began on Tuesday to dismantle the TimberTown complex in Huizenga Park. According to Mayor Kevin Klynstra, age was the biggest factor in this. “If you have a deck at home, you know what they start to look like after 25 years,” he said in a Tuesday appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” about the all-wood playground. “This gets lots of use, kids were starting to get splinters, and things were starting to fall apart, so we figured that it was time to look at something new that was a little more handicap-accessible.”
Installing the 600 thousand-dollar playground by next spring is the first phase of an overall 2.7 million-dollar, four-phase renovation of the park that includes new pathways and parking lots, an upgrade in restroom facilities, a fishing pier, a skate park, and courts for pickleball and basketball.
