HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Construction on M-6 is on schedule says John Richard from the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The eastbound pavement has been removed and paving will start in a few days.
“And then westbound is gonna close on August 28 I believe is the latest date we have. So there is gonna be some overlap on when both bounds are closed, but we’re still on schedule to construct it this year. So that’s the good news. We will be suspending a lot of the work for the Labor Day weekend to accomodate all that holiday travel. So it will be a lot less restrictions during that holiday weekend.”
The 13-year-old highway had been crumbling due to a shortage in resin when it was built, which is a key part of concrete. The highway had to be built with synthetic resin, the quality of which had not been perfected in 2004.
On the other side of I-96 at the eastern end of M-6 Richard says it looks a lot worse than it is and that will be reconstructed in two years. Until then they will keep patching it up.
