HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – With the summer months ending and winter creeping up faster than you think, it’s time to clean up area beaches before the snow starts to fly.
The Alliance for the Great Lakes is looking for volunteers to participate in their regional Adopt a beach Cleanup event during the month of Septermber. Communities in seven different states surrounding all five Great Lakes will be participating in the event, with over 10 local beach access points stretching from Muskegon to Saugatuck taking part in the cleanup.
A spokesperson from the Alliance for the Great Lakes, Jennifer Caddick, says that not only would volunteers be making the beaches look nicer, but they would also be helping scientists solve pollution problems.
Volunteers will record the types and amounts of trash they pick up, and a team leader will enter the numbers into a database. The data then will be used by researchers to come up with solutions to help combat beach pollution in those communities.
Currently, the Black River United Way Club will be running the clean-up event on Sunday, Sept. 17 at Oval Beach in Douglas from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. At Holland State Park on Saturday, Sept. 16, the Hudsonville High School Green Team will be sponsoring the event from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. A team leader spot is still up for grabs at the Buchanan St. access point in Grand Haven.
