ZEELAND TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A two-vehicle semi-truck crash in Zeeland has left a Zeeland man dead and a Coopersville man in critical condition.
59-year-old Jim Vandenbosch of Zeeland who was not wearing his seat belt was pronounced dead at the scene.
Capt. Bob Tease of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to the semi crash at 64th Avenue and Perry Street about 11:27 a.m. An 1998 international semi dump truck owned by the Ottawa County Road Commission was being Jim Vandenbosch. Vandenbosch was traveling eastbound on Perry street just after unloading his load and either failed to stop or failed to yield at the intersection. Stop signs are posted for east and westbound traffic on Perry Street. 64th Avenue has no stop signs.
The dump truck crashed into a Kenworth semi-tractor trailer owned by Janssen trucking driven by 40-year-old Andrew Janssen of Coopersville. Janssen was northbound on 64th Avenue hauling animal grain feed when she crash occurred. According to Janssen, Vandenbosch did not stop for the stop sign and drove into the intersection in front of him.
The crash caused the two semis to go off the roadway and land in a field in the northeast quadrant of the intersection with Janssen’s semi rolling over. Janssen was pinned in his cab for an hour and 20 minutes. Aeromed was called to the scene and after further assessment, Janssen was transported to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in critical condition.
The intersection was closed for several hours and the crash remains under investigation.
