Ottawa County has been awarded a large grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to clean up the Sand Creek watershed.
It was announced on Wednesday, August 8 that that the Ottawa County Water Resource Commissioner’s office was awarded 6 hundred thousand dollars from Department of Environmental Quality’s Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Grants Program.
Using the grant money, officials will stabilize the eroding stream banks of the Sand Creek, as well as restore the wetlands surrounding the creek and promote the farm bill pollution prevention practices.
The Sand Creek is located in Wright and Chester Townships in northeast Ottawa County, and is connected to the Grand River, which in turn flows into Lake Michigan. The improvements to Sand Creek will hopefully reduce sentiment by an estimated 1,250 tons per year and greatly diminish the transfer of sediment to the Grand River and Lake Michigan.
