HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Holland has been named one of the most runner-friendly cities in the country by a national road running organization.
Eight communities across the country were honored with this award presented by The Road Runners Club of America. The list includes Sheboygan, WI; Ithaca, NY; Memphis, TN; among others. Two Michigan cities were also mentioned: Huntington Woods (a suburb of Detroit) and Holland.
In order to qualify as runner friendly, a community has to have a great infrastructure, community support and local government support for running.
Heather Boswell is on the Board of Directors for the Holland Running Club, and was responsible for applying for the award. She says that the City of Holland has made running in Holland an easier task with programs like the sidewalk snowmelt system.
“The City is taking more of an approach to the pedestrian infrastructure called ‘walkable communities for complete streets’ that make sure that whether your running downtown, or throughout the city, that you have a safe place to be active and participate in a sport such as running.”
The Holland Running Club was formed in 2014, and holds tri-weekly runs throughout Holland. It has also partnered with many organizations to promote the sport of running in the Holland community.
