HOLLAND, MI (WHTC AM/FM) – Two men were caught under a part of the roof that collapsed during renovations of the Holland Civic Center on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one dead and the other injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 3p.m. on Tuesday, August 1. A portion of the roof near the front entrance of the Holland Civic Center, located at 150 W 8th St., fell onto two workers. One man was caught underneath the roof and the other was found by police and fire/rescue responders nearby.
The injured man was treated and taken to Holland Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
Responders freed the man caught underneath the debris, but he was pronounced dead on the scene.
In a statement from Holland Public Safety Capt. Keith Mulder, it is unknown what caused the portion of the roof to collapse.
The names of the victims have not been released pending family notification, but Capt. Mulder said the two men were subcontractors.
Mayor Nancy Deboer was also on the scene and said the incident was “a very tragic accident and our hearts go out to the families involved in the loss of these two people that were working hard on the Civic Center.”
There has been no word on how this will affect the schedule of the Holland Civic Center renovations.
