HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Reports of a dry drowning proved to be unfounded in the case of an eight-year-old Jenison boy.
Mekhi Davon Ivy died as a result of a near drowning in a pool at a home in Georgetown Township. The boy was transported to Grand Rapids on Saturday and died the following day, Sunday, June 25.
Captain Mark Bennett with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says an autopsy was performed at Blodgett Hospital Tuesday, June 27. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Steven Cole has ruled death to be asphyxiation by drowning. Those findings reveal a regular or traditional type drowning and not a dry drowning situation.
A dry drowning can occur after the fact and without water remaining in the airways.
Over $9,000 has been raised on a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses.
