HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The memory of Riley Hoeksema lives on not just in the hearts of those who knew him, but also in a day dedicated to of random acts of kindness.
Monday, June 19, marked the year anniversary of Riley’s death on Lake Michigan. Hoeksema disappeared near Holland State Park in June of 2016, when his small boat capsized. .
Riley’s life was celebrated Monday in Holland with random acts of kindness in which the community then shared their acts and memories on a Facebook page called “Riley’s Kindness.”
Local businesses like Captain Sundae participated by matching donations of ice cream cones for the kids at Harbor Village. A $100 tip was given at the 8th Street Grille in honor of Riley. Friend’s of Riley handed out flowers and lollipops in downtown Holland and former students gathered in support of one another to show Riley’s family that his memory lives on. Prayers were even said at Holland State Park in honor of Riley.
Riley who was a member of the swim team would have been going into his Senior year in the fall at Holland Christian High School.
