ROBINSON TWP., MI (WHTC) – Drowsy driving can lead to accidents at any time, as a 27-year-old Grand Rapids woman found out yesterday afternoon.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, Merissa Witt was driving eastbound on Lake Michigan Drive west of Allendale around 3:20 PM when her SUV veered into the westbound lanes at the M-231 junction and slammed head-on into a semi that was waiting to make a left-hand turn. Witt’s vehicle then veered left and collided with a westbound pickup truck.
The woman had to be extricated by first responders, and before she was flown to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in serious condition, Witt was able to tell deputies that she had nodded off behind the wheel. The drivers of the semi and the pickup were not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation.
