ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) – A two-vehicle rollover crash on a busy artery during the afternoon commute on Tuesday resulted in critical injuries for the drivers involved.
Zeeland police and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies didn’t initially disclose too many details, including the identities of the motorists, following the collision at the intersection of State Street and Business-196 that occurred around 2:30 PM. A westbound van collided with a southbound SUV, causing the SUV to flip onto its top and burst into flames. First responders were able to bring the fire under control and extricate that driver. Both drivers were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
The busy intersection, which has seen its share of serious and fatal accidents over the years, was blocked off in all directions for several hours while the crash was being investigated. An AeroMed unit was dispatched to the scene from Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital, but was not needed to convey any patients to that Grand Rapids medical facility.
