HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Although coal is no longer shipped into Lake Macatawa, the Holland Harbor will still get dredged this year.
It’s lower down on the US Army Corps of Engineers’ priority list now as the BPW transitions from the coal-fired DeYoung Power Plant to the new natural gas-fueled facility at the Holland Energy Park, but the harbor still has enough commercial traffic to warrant getting around 34 thousand cubic yards of material hauled out by Holland-based contractor King Company Incorporated. That traffic through the channel which connects the Holland Harbor with Lake Michigan consists of shipments of building aggregate materials, petroleum products and other commodities.
King Company will also haul about 30 thousand cubic yards of material out of the channel near St. Joseph during a month-long effort that begins next Monday. An Army Corps spokeswoman said that funding to dredge these two harbors is also included in next year’s department budget.
