HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The Salmon in the Classroom project is a unique partnership between the Michigan DNR and select schools from across the state of Michigan.
These select schools agree to care for the salmon as they grow before releasing them. Students in Fennville recently planted salmon in the Kalamazoo River.
“Isn’t it so great to get students out of the classroom and into the woods. That’s where the real science is. That’s where the living is. That’s where see how important going to school is and they get to see it in real life.” says State Rep. Mary Whiteford.
Recently Whiteford welcomed a group of students from Fennville High School to the Capitol where they gave a special presentation to the House Natural Resources Committee.
The students, along with their science teacher Carole McNeal, joined Rep. Whiteford in sharing with the committee their work to raise and release salmon in the Kalamazoo River as part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Salmon in the Classroom project.
Over 100 Michigan schools currently participate in the Salmon in the Classroom project. For more information you can visit the Michigan DNR website.
