NORTON SHORES, MI (WHTC) – The Norton Shores community is in mourning for a police officer killed in a car crash.
Officer John Ginka’s car rammed into a tree at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday on Henry Street by Ross Road. The 34-year-old police officer died of his injuries in the hospital.
Police escorted Ginka’s body from Kalamazoo to Sytsema Funeral Home in Norton Shores after his autopsy yesterday.
Accident investigators say the cruiser was about a half mile away from the police station on a street with a 35 mph speed limit, when it veered off the pavement without braking and struck a tree.
Officer Ginka was a graduate of the Kalamazoo Valley Police Academy and leaves behind a wife and two children.
A memorial with a flag and flowers has been set up at the site of the crash
