HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Holland High School Theatre group’s production of “SUDS” will take you back to the 1960’s and to a laundromat during the 2017 Tulip Time Festival.
It’s the story of a young woman who works in a laundromat and the guardian angels who teaches her how to find true love. It’s being called a “Rocking 60’s Musical Soap Opera.”
How did the students prepare for their roles in a time where the transistor radio and bouffants ruled? Holland High Theatre Director Kevin Schneider says the first thing they had to do was have the cast listen and watch videos of the original recordings of the 50 songs that topped the charts in the 60’s.
Schneider says it’s a totally different type of audience during the Tulip Time Festival.
“At first we weren’t sure what that might mean because we’ve have people that don’t know us or even realize that we’re high school or that the performers are highschoolers. We really felt that we were at a disadvantage, but what we’ve learned over the years is their some of the best audiences. When we’re doing shows like this, they know this music and they love this music. They love to see the younger performers sharing that joy and excitement with them, so we get a really big response from the audience.”
SUDS runs Thursday May 11 through Sunday May 14 at Holland High School Performing Arts Center located at 600 Van Raalte Avenue in Holland.
Tickets are available at the high school, Tulip Time offices and online.
