HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Today is Donate Life Day and the Michigan Secretary of State is encouraging people to sign up on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says the need is never ending. Right now there are 3,501 people in Michigan waiting for that lifesaving phone call. Over the past six years the registry has doubled going from 27% in 2011 to nearly 59% in 2017. Johnson says registered donors went from 2.4 million to 4.5 million donors which is enough to fill the Ray and Sue Smith Stadium at Hope College at 840 times.
“Anyone can be a donor. Any race and any age. Our oldest donor was 104 years old. One donor can save the lives of eight people and improve the quality of life for 50-75 others. Michigan in 2016 there were 299 organ donors which resulted in 876 life saving transplants and nearly 1300 residents received the gift of sight.”
You can register to be a donor at any Michigan Secretary of State Office and online.
