LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Steve Kemper has received one of his first appointments as Ottawa County Sheriff.
Governor Snyder on Friday tabbed the first-year chief lawman to represent his colleagues on the state Mental Health Diversion Council. This panel, housed within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, “helps strengthen the state’s mental health system,” as written in a statement from the Governor’s office, offering “solutions to improve services for Michiganders living with mental health conditions to help ensure better quality of life, safety and independence.”
Kempker was elected last November as Sheriff to replace the retiring Gary Rosema, and has been in the department for 27 years, rising through the ranks to Undersheriff prior to his election. He will serve the remainder of Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham’s four-year term on the MHDC through the end of January, 2019.
