Thirteen area high schools take part in this exciting exhibition including Black River, Careerline Tech, Coopersville, Fennville, Grand Haven, Grandville, Hamilton, Holland Christian, Holland, Jenison, Saugatuck, West Ottawa and Zeeland. Each art instructor may submit 15 works from their students. The Arts Council chooses a juror from the artistic community whose task is to choose the pieces for the exhibit. 3/11 Saturday: Icebound Found! The Ordeal of the S.S. Michigan at Hemlock Crossing- In 1885, the crew on the S.S. Michigan became icebound off West Michigan during one of the worst winter storms in history. After 40 days, their ship was crushed by the ice and sank, forcing them onto the ice-covered lake. Everyone lived due to the heroic actions of the ship’s youngest crew member George Sheldon. Over 120 years later local underwater explorers and historians with the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association located the sunken remains of this 200-foot steamer in deep water off Holland, Michigan. Author and explorer Valerie van Heest shares this multifaceted tale through a riveting historical reenactment, an unfolding search effort, and a deep dive 275 feet beneath Lake Michigan. 8115 West Olive Rd., West Olive; 3pm-4:30pm; $2.
