HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A hometown protest had close to one thousand people turn up at Centennial Park In Holland rallying against Betsy Devos’ nomination for U.S. Secretary of Education.
The protest was made up of parents, teachers, and both sides of the political spectrum. Protesters marched and spoke freely to WHTC News.
Tom Parker who is a retired school teacher said he was there to show support to those who feel that Betsy should not be confirmed as Education Secretary. “I’m doing it for the kids too. She is not qualified and has no experience. I would prefer just about anyone but Betsy.”
When asked who Parker feels should be confirmed for Secretary of Education, he said he knew a few people who would make a good Education Secretary, but did not name anyone.
A woman named Jackie said she was there because she is a believer in public education. ” I am here believer in oublic education and I am marching against somebody show does not know anything against the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act).”
During DeVos’ confirmation hearings, Senator Gary Peters Peters criticized DeVos during her hearing regarding measuring student success by growth or proficiency and questioning regarding the the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
A vote on DeVos’ confirmation is expected some time next week.
