HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Holland City Council has passed a joint resolution with Holland Township to build non-motorized bridge linking Windmill Island Gardens with Holland’s North Side near the Boar’s Head plant.
Grant money and funding by the city and township, along with fundraising will get the project off the ground. The total cost will be $3.3 million dollars.
The project hit a few snags over the years with the necessary lengthening of the span due to soil issues at the planned northern base of the bridge. The other was a federal mandate to have the bridge widened in order to accommodate ambulance access in an emergency. Those issues led to an increased cost of the project, which also includes establishing a sidewalk along the current access road from downtown, according to City Manager Ryan Cotton.
Bidding on building the bridge that will benefit the community with pathways and more recreation like biking and walking, could come later this month. Read the full report here.
