HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The 2017 Michigan Battle of the Buildings is underway and it is designed to encourage and recognize energy efficient practices among building owners and operators.
Hosted by the U.S. Green Buildings Council, West Michigan Chapter (USGBC-WM), it’s the only competition of it’s kind and there is no cost to participate. Since the Battle’s inception, competitors have reduced 17,051.4 metric tons of equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e), which is comparable to taking 3,602 vehicles off the road for a year.
USGBC-WM Executive Director Cheri Holman says it’s like a Biggest Loser styled energy reduction competition. There are 10 different categories with participants included hospitals, manufacturing facilities, office buildings, and libraries, among others. Last year’s winners will be recognized at the Annual Energy Summit in Grand Rapids on April 19th. including financial institutions, education, and mixed-use.
“It’s a way for businesses to learn from each other. A whole year is dedicated to working to reduce your energy. This year we added the category water. 10-15 competitors will speak at the Annual Energy Summit in Grand Rapids.”

Title sponsors for the Michigan Battle of the Buildings are Consumers Energy and DTE Energy. Competition is open to owners and operators of commercial, industrial, institutional, non-profit, multi-family, retail and education buildings in the state of Michigan that have 2016 energy data.
