HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – With wintry weather once again making its presence known with authority along the Lakeshore this week, school administrators sometimes have to make a tough call long before classes are to start.
Holland Public Schools are scheduled to welcome students back to the classroom on Thursday after the Christmas/New Year’s Break. When the weather is bad, Superintendent Brian Davis has to get up as early as 4:30 AM to confer with his colleagues in neighboring districts before deciding on delays or cancellations.
“What many people may not recognize or understand today,” Dr. Davis said in an appearance on “WHTC Morning News,” “is how interconnected school systems actually are. We share many services across the region, from transportation to food service. We have a number of students in schools of choice (who travel) from one district to another for different program opportunities, so while one district may be open, we can’t be asking students to drive through districts that are closed to attend one that is.”
A relatively mild fall and early winter has meant that districts in the Holland/Zeeland area have taken an average or below average amount of “snow days” thus far in this academic year.
