HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – A two-vehicle crash near Zeeland has led to the first reported road-related fatality of 2017 along the Lakeshore.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin, 41-year-old Cameron Burrows was driving his pickup truck eastbound on Business 196 around 12:30 this afternoon when he apparently drove through a red light at 104th Avenue, broadsiding the northbound car of 65-year-old Sandra DeBoer of Zeeland. Although she was buckled up, the force of the collision pinned her inside of her vehicle, and she was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Her 10-year-old grandson, Gavin DeBoer, was seated beside her as a passenger. He was buckled up but suffered critical injuries and was taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital for treatment. Burrows, who was also wearing a seat belt, went to Holland Hospital in serious condition.
The crash closed the roadway for about two hours as accident reconstructionists investigated the scene. Austin added that the case will be forwarded to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office for review, which is done after any fatal accident.
