HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Although the Holland Rescue Mission tends to see the number of families and individuals seeking shelter decrease right before the holidays, they are still in need.
It’s common for those seeking shelter to reach out to family members leading up to Christmas, but come January their numbers will increase. Right now the Mission is putting together Emergency Shelter Gift Bags that are given to families and individuals on Christmas Day. $20 Gift cards from Meijer are also needed so that families can purchase items like clothing, personal hygiene items and more.
Volunteer Event Coordinator Anna Southwell says coats, mittens, hats and boots are also needed.
Holland Rescue Mission Executive Director Darryl Bartlett says that men more willing brave the elements. “They just want to live out in the community in tents and in the woods. We know where those encampments are and frequent them and try to compel people to come in.”
Bartlett says that many wonder why there are homeless in such a great job market. “Here’s the reality. Most are coming in and they are poorly educated. Many times there are all kinds of family dysfunction and dynamics that are taking place. They have sought shelter at relatives and friends houses and the children have known instability for a long time. That’s why we provide daycare so that the parents can seek employment and the children are cared for.”
