HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The “help wanted” sign would be appropriate next to the familiar red kettles outside of many establishments this Christmas season.
Salvation Army officials locally and in many other communities say that volunteer numbers to “ring the bell” during the annual Red Kettle campaign are down this year. That has also led to lower-than-normal fundraising numbers, according to Major Matt Grindle of the Holland chapter.
“You know, it’s been way too warm and nice out,” he admitted to WHTC News. “Maybe people feel like we got a lot of time til Christmas, so while I don’t want to be blamed for brining all the snow, perhaps the winter snow coming our way might put people in the giving spirit this holiday.”
While Salvation Army fundraising and charity work goes year-round, the Red Kettle campaign only runs through December 24th. Major Grindle said that contributions are down around 10 thousand dollars from this time last year.
