HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Holland City Council is looking to amend a law that would make it legal for people to walk their leashed dogs through city parks like Kollen and Centennial.
Mayor Nancy DeBoer says council had a reading of the law change at their Wednesday night meeting and is considering leashed dogs in all city parks except the Matt Urban Sports Complex, Maplewood Youth Complex and Degraaf Nature Center.
DeBoer explained why the sports complexes and Nature Center would remain off limits to dogs.
“A lot of children and a lot of people are milling around and they are playing sports on the field at the sports complexes and if we had animals that went in the wrong places, it would not be a good idea. At Degraaf Nature Center, we haven’t really thought of that before, but if we have dogs in there they will scare all the critters away and we wouldn’t have the birds. People come to Degraaf for the full spectrum of animals.”
Council will have a final reading on the adoption of the dog ordinance at it’s next meeting on December 7.
