MANLIUS TWP, MI (WHTC) – Dense fog contributed to a morning crash with a semi tractor trailer that had a stock trailer with approximately 2,220 young pigs on board in Allegan County
Captain Chris Kuhn of the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office says the semi tried to cross the intersection at 58th Street at around 9 a.m. Tuesday, November 15, when it was struck broadside in the trailer by a northbound box type truck. The damage from the impact caused the death of about 20 pigs and allowed another 200 to escape.
Members of the community and workers from the farm where the pigs originated were eventually able to corral the pigs to safety.
The intersection was closed for approximately two hours. All drivers were wearing their seatbelts and names have not been released. The remaining pigs were eventually back on theIr way to their destination in Indiana.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Hamilton Fire Department, Graafschap Fire Department and AMR ambulance.
