11/13 Sunday: The Free @ 3 Concert Series at First Reformed Church of Holland- The Free @ 3 Concert Series is held on various Sunday afternoons at 3:00 in the sanctuary of the First Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan. These concerts are open to the public and are free of charge. Scheduled this Sunday is Alfred Fedak Plays the Mighty Casavant with Susan Hermance-Fedak, soprano and Richard Van Oss, organ. 630 State Street, Holland; 3pm; Free.
11/14 Monday: Knickerbocker Theatre Fall Film Series: The Man Who Knew Infinity- In the 1910s, Srinivasa Ramanujan is a man of boundless intelligence that even the abject poverty of his home in Madras, India cannot crush. Eventually, his stellar intelligence in mathematics and his boundless confidence in both attract the attention of the noted British mathematics professor, G.H. Hardy, who invites him to further develop his computations at Trinity College at Cambridge. Forced to leave his young wife, Janaki behind, Ramanujan finds himself in a land where both his largely intuitive mathematical theories and his cultural values run headlong into both the stringent academic requirements of his school and mentor and the prejudiced realities of a Britain heading into World War One. Facing this with a family back home determined to keep him from his wife and his own declining health, Ramanujan joins with Hardy in a mutual struggle that would define Ramanujan as one of India’s greatest modern scholars who broke more than one barrier in his worlds. 11/15 Tuesday: Big Read Keynote Address: Edwidge Danticat at Dimnent Memorial Chapel – Edwidge Danticat, author of “Brother, I’m Dying,” will deliver the keynote address. Edwidge Danticat was born in Haiti and came to the United States when she was twelve years old. Book signing will follow. Sponsored by the Jack Ridl Visiting Writer Series, Lakewood Contstruction, and James & Carol Stroop. 277 College Ave., Holland; 7pm-8pm.
11/16 Wednesday: Lunch at the Museum: Cappon Family- Uncover the hidden stories from the Cappon family! We’ll be hearing from former Holland Museum interns Sarah Beamish and Abby Klomparens, who will be discussing their summer research on the Cappon family. This program will provide an in-depth look at some of the untold stories of one of Holland’s most famous families. Bring a lunch – we’ll provide the beverages! 31 W 10th St, Holland; 12 pm-1 pm. Free
11/17 Thursday: RePrize 2016 at the Holland Area Arts Council- In their fifth annual nod to Grand Rapids’ ARTPrize, the Arts Council invites select local Lakeshore participants of this years’ event to display their entries in their galleries. 150 E 8th St, Holland; Opening reception with refreshments and light appetizers taking place on November 17th from 6-8 pm. Exhibition open through January 13. Free.
11/18 Friday: Holland Christian High School Theater Presents: Footloose- Footloose, a 1998 musical based on the 1984 movie of the same name, was one of the most explosive movie musicals bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn’t prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town’s youth that he cannot command in his own home. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, and guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. 950 Ottawa Ave., Holland; 7pm; $8-$10.
11/19 Saturday: Downtown Holiday Open House- During the event, groups of carolers stroll along the sidewalk, entertaining crowds with Christmas carols, while the smell of roasting chestnuts fills the air. Santa Claus visits businesses too, handing out candy canes and posing for photographs with young and old alike. Children can even visit Santa’s reindeer at the petting corral during this special event! The Holiday Open House concludes at 8:00 pm with a tree lighting ceremony and a Christmas carol sing-a-long, right on 8th Street in the heart of Downtown Holland. Attendees will be invited to join our sponsor representatives, City officials and of course, Santa Claus himself, as the official Downtown Holland Christmas tree is illuminated with thousands of sparkling lights. 78 East 8th Street, Holland; 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM; Free.
