HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – A 27-year-old Holland man was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a busy road on Holland’s North Side on Friday evening.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jay Douglas, Daniel VanHekken was wearing dark clothing and wasn’t in a marked crosswalk when he tried to get across James Street near North Park Drive around 7:15 PM. He was hit by the vehicle of Cecilia Sandoval as the 36-year-old Holland woman was pulling out of a private driveway and attempted to go eastbound. VanHekken, who was knocked to the ground as a result of the impact, was taken to Holland Hospital in stable condition for treatment of what was termed minor injuries; Sandoval was buckled up and not hurt.
Douglas added that alcohol didn’t appear to be a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation.
