ALLENDALE TWP., MI (WHTC) – The municipality where Grand Valley State University’s main campus resides is addressing a safety problem.
During Monday night’s meeting, the Allendale Township Board approved, following a public hearing, resolutions and agreements for installing permanent street lighting along 48th Avenue on the western edge of the GVSU campus, along with sharing the cost of installing a sidewalk on Pierce Street between 42nd and 48th avenues, along off-campus housing off of the campus’ southwest corner. Those projects will begin next summer.
Consumers Energy had put up six temporary lights along 48th Avenue near West Campus Drive earlier this month in response to four reported separate off-campus sexual assaults since the start of classes in August. The utility had already planned to put up permanent lighting, with the school footing some of the costs, while the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department was working with campus police on additional security measures.
So far, no suspects have been taken into custody in these incidents.
