HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – Quick work by bystanders prevented what could have been a bicycle crash on Holland’s North Side from becoming more serious than it was.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, 55-year-old John Dreyer of Zeeland was pedaling his bike through a parking lot off of Lakewood Boulevard and 112th Avenue between Holland and Zeeland around 8:45 on Monday evening. The bike hit a groove, causing the handle bars to turn and impaled the cyclist in the groin as he was being thrown to the ground. Two passers-by, one of which was an off-duty Holland Public Safety officer, came to Dreyer’s aid and applied pressure on the wound before first responders arrived.
Dreyer was first taken to Holland Hospital and then transported to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in serious condition. The crash remains under investigation.
