HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – School districts across Michigan are going over a new state law that requires students to be proficient in reading at a third-grade level before being promoted to fourth grade.
It is an effort, supporters say, that creates a “proactive” literacy system designed to help those from kindergarten through third grade gain necessary proficiency in English Language Arts before entering the fourth grade. While some educators objected to a “one-size-fits-all” approach that they claimed this bill advocated, others such as Holland Superintendent Brian Davis say that they’ve already ready for this new law.
In his monthly visit to “WHTC Talk of the Town” on Tuesday, Dr. Davis told host Ed Ver Schure, “Holland has had an early literacy initiative in place for three years, and what we have seen is substantial growth of our youngest readers. We’re pretty excited about that.”
The new law takes effect next fall.
