CROCKERY TWP., MI (WHTC) – Texting while driving is illegal in Michigan, but anything dealing with a cell phone in a moving vehicle can be dangerous, as a 54-year-old Muskegon man found out on Monday evening.
According to Ottawa County sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, Aaron Nelson was driving his minivan eastbound on Leonard Street at 104th Avenue in Crockery Township just before 7 PM. His vehicle ran off of the road and hit a pole, a landscaping rock and a vacant storage barn before coming to rest. Nelson admitted to responding deputies that he had been trying to plug in his cell phone before losing control of his vehicle.
Before he was taken to Mercy Health in stable condition for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, Nelson was ticketed for careless driving. The crash remains under investigation.
